Doughnuts

Total Time: 2 hrs 2 mins Preparation Time: 2 hrs Cook Time: 2 mins

Ingredients

  • 1 (1/4 ounce) package active dry yeast
  • 1/4 cup warm water
  • 3/4 cup warm milk
  • 4 cups all-purpose flour
  • 1/2 cup sugar
  • 1/2 teaspoon nutmeg
  • 1/2 teaspoon salt
  • 2 eggs, well beaten
  • 1/2 cup vegetable shortening, melted
  • vegetable oil (for deep frying)

Recipe

  • 1 dissolve the yeast in the warm water and allow to proof for 5 minutes.
  • 2 add the milk, half the flour, and half the sugar.
  • 3 beat until smooth, cover and let rise for 30 minutes.
  • 4 sift together the remaining flour, sugar, salt, and nutmeg.
  • 5 in a separate bowl, mix together the eggs and shortening.
  • 6 combine the yeast mixture, the sifted ingredients, and the wet ingredients in a large bowl.
  • 7 mix until a soft dough forms.
  • 8 knead on a floured surface for 5 minutes.
  • 9 cover and let rise for 1 hour.
  • 10 roll the dough out on a floured surface to a thickness of 1 inch (2. 5 cm).
  • 11 cut with a floured doughnut cutter.
  • 12 cover and let rise for 1 hour.
  • 13 heat the vegetable oil in a large skillet and fry the doughnuts for 2 to 3 minutes, turning when golden brown.
  • 14 drain on paper towels and serve immediately.
